According to Hoffman’s tests, 18 g of his coffee bean sample (roughly 2 to 2-1/2 teaspoons of ground espresso) brewed as espresso had 110 mg of caffeine. Pour over-brewed, however, delivered 180mg of caffeine. This is close to a 50 percent increase!

Hoffmann’s research also revealed that, although not surprising, instant coffee has low caffeine content. The recommended serving size of 2 grams of instant espresso coffee will give you only 80 mg of caffeine.

Not just the taste. Your brewing method will affect the caffeine you get from each cup. You may think that an espresso is the best way to wake up. However, according to popular Coffee Youtuber James Hoffmann’s tests, an espresso-even one with a double or full shot–does not have the highest amount of caffeine. Hoffmann, the World Atlas of Coffee and author of Square Mile Coffee Roasters can be trusted to have brewing knowledge.

Hoffmann bought a $2,500 Lighttells caffein analyzer and started playing with it. The device is simple but expensive. It scans a few drops of coffee to reveal the caffeine content.

The caffeine content of a cup is measured in milligrams. The FDA recommends 400 mg of caffeine per day for adults. However, the amount you “need” will vary depending on your tolerance. There is a limited amount of information about the caffeine content of coffee. However, Google will tell you that a coffee cup contains between 63 and 125 mg.
